DEADLY NORTHERN LIGHTS /2

Day 1&2

Soviet Turn

Soviets seek WMD Chemical weapons release and get it. The Swedes move SF unit into the City of Stockholm, and the Milo O HQ down to the Naval Base. A handful of ships and all the subs move to sea.

The Soviets place a big bet on securing air superiority, and also fake out the Swedes by placing a 2nd zone just North of Stockholm. Forcing the Swedish airforce to try and cover two zones with limited resources. [As a solo player, I roll a die to see if the Swedes take the bait. They do].

Once air superiority is achieved, and ASW/Naval surveillance in place. 133 foot long Tupulov 22 ‘Backfires’ streaking along at over 900 mph, theirs was a simple mission -SEAD, or in layman terms flak suppression. ECM squadrons support the effort

They target the Naval Base housing Swedish HQ, SF forces and the FFG Stockholm.

Using long range stand off munitions; Kinzhals they deploy from the frames swept back wings.

The craft bank in a low lazy arc and head back to base.

Mission accomplished.

On the ground the Swedes reel, systems are down, war is actually here. Someone says this is not a drill…is it?

Then the 2nd wave hits, with clear paths, air to sea, air to ground munitions launch and strikes pound the defenders on both land and sea.

However, close in defensive systems and poor detection capabilities by the Soviets and artful dodging in the straits by the sailors sees nominal damage inflicted upon the Stockholm.

TaskForce
Три  or three is hounded by Swedish subs, their attacks are ineffectual but highlight the danger the TF faces getting to its objectives.

Firstly in a classic scene direct from a maritime movie about the Russo Japanese naval battles the Russians line up and all along the archipelago blast the shore batteries, guarding the mainland.

The fires are horrendous and the damage significant. The guns are silenced with little loss, though a missile frigate is rendered in operable.

TF3 then moves to intercept the Stockholm, engage it with missiles and gunnery if needed to remove it as a threat. The brave souls of The Stockholm sink the damaged Frigate, and damage another. The Soviet missile spread sinks the Minesweeper and badly damages the Stockholm, gunnery finishes it off.

At the same time, TF один , one avoids detection by the Swedish hunter killer subs. The guide the LST’s to landing and the Marines assault into the base, storm piers, docks and coast line. The undermanned, underpowered HQ seeks air support or reinforcement, but the massive guns of half a dozen ships and the ferocious fighting spirit of the Marines overwhelms them.

[7:1 +air for mods, Cadre adjustments etc it ends up as a +5 mod in favour of the Soviets. Who roll a D result on a 16.] The Swedish HQ retreats to a nearby airfield. The port is damaged, but repairable. The Heli-port is captured intact. Phase 1 accomplished.

Airborne drops north of Stockholm to block the reinforcement of Stockholm or at last slow it down, while the Port is repaired and full divisions can be shipped in.

[Note error made here. I made the attack on the Swedish SF. I did not need to. IT ends up a horrid A1 result on a 7:1 with a plus 2 DRM. Ends up due to no eZOCs into or out of the City terrain that no attack was required. We will adjust that and not do the attack, as in hindsight it was brash and not really part of the plan.

Some hours ago, large Soviet transporters loaded massive supplies and kit. Knowing full well that 1/3 of it would end up in the wrong hands or not at all. Bu yet the came anyway. This drops enough supply to enable Port repairs.

We near the end of the opening 1 or so of fighting and now look to see how the Swedes will react and the rest of the world as to how they respond to this aggressive invasion.

  1. These are great, Kevin. Thanks for writing them up.

FWIW I’d let the “brash” attack on the Swedish SF unit stand, as I would expect more than a few ill-advised attacks in such a conflict. 🙂
