Update as Cirta 106 B.C winds down [GBoH]

Great Battle s of Julius Caesar Deluxe Edition.

106 B.C. Marius is going well fear not.

However, Our little ambitious ‘poor man’ Proconsul has a crazy whirling battle on his hands.

Let’s try something different and work backwards.

At the moment, Marius’s four Legions are effectively being screened by Cavalry top of screen and Light troops in the rear. But there are cracks appearing. He has used this time to deploy Legion Cohorts in two angled lines and in the southern most line actually pressed forward, vs taking the slings and arrows [see what I did there ] or Javelins of the Numidian and Moorish horse with no response.

They have chosen to retreat before combat, causing quiet a stir and crowded in. This has caused some disruptions via TQ checks.

Why retreat? Well combats on the 10 or better table are some nasty, nasty affairs. With a minimum of 2 TQ steps lost and more likely 3 or 4. Which for these Numis-will kill them as they are 4 rated. The Mooris hold a bit better but not by much. Even the Recruit level Cohorts are giving them a bit of a spanking.

I’m not sure the Legions have much to fear from the advancing Lights, as they are scattered.

As those lines formed up the Numidians and Moors were content to rummage around throwing Javelins. I think they would have been better served spreading out.

Earlier the Roman and Gaulish cav at top of screen mauled the Numidians, but when their turn came they returned the favor. As they had a fresh line to advance up! But it did as I said give us some time to get Cohorts squared away.

The game really highlights the missing elements of the African armies. Heavy foot and Heavy cav. Also to a certain extent better ranged weapons i.e. archers. The lack of combined arms, means the Numidian forces are a 1 trick pony, so to speak.. [ ] . I know two puns in one post!!

As of the moment its about 80+ rout pts to Jurgatha, and 30-40 to the Romans without an exact count. Still a way to go, but I can see that the Southern portion of the map will get wiped shortly and that will be before the Romans collapse at top or North with their Cav. In fact, I would likely disengage the cavalry and let the Numidian cav come and get a taste of all the Pilum!
