The side benefit of Conventions

This year started off slow with not much happening in January, just 5 plays as I was deep into attempting to learn the Death Ride System, which ate a lot of hours up. But in Feb, it was time to head to Game On! While there I met new players, made new friends and got a lot of new to me games played. I’ve commented on all of those in a video here. I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out and watching a lot of different wargames being played, which of course has my wallet hating me.

But the other side benefit beyond the social aspects is just getting a lot done!

7 games/sessions played! Some quiet substantial too. Not only was there the opportunity to revisit old friends – Panzer & WAW85, but explore new multi player titles such as Westphalia that must have 6 players to be played. Plus Adventurer, darn! A skirmish game set in a bar in space! How cool is that, also another title I would never play solo.

When you go to a convention for wargaming or gaming in general what do you like to achieve?

One large Monster, or many sessions of smaller games, or perhaps just dropping in and trying something new?

  1. At Winterfest Wargaming in Sandusky this last week we were able to play 28 turns of a combined WED/TDC in GTS. It was a good solid week of gaming. Lots of good times.

  2. I bring a big bag of things I have been working on, in hopes that someone might volunteer to test ftf (I don’t have a ftf testing group that meets regularly).
Most of the stuff stays in the bag but I can usually get someone to try something.
The rest of the time I wander around socializing, I don’t play much though I try to give away copies of Guerrilla Checkers which is easy and fast enough as a good filler for a wargame convention.

  3. The goal is at least 1 new game and lots of smaller sessions of games that are more difficult to solo or just ‘don’t get the love’ anymore.

  4. If I may ask, which conventions are you planning to attend this year?
