Screaming Eagles in Holland Scenario

Situation

Map boundaries. The German forces enter from the areas labelled D and E. and are tasked with capturing key bridges across the Zuid Willems Canal. One near the Dorshout edge of town and one linking Schopenriek-Leest.

The US Airborne are situated on the locations in prepared defences meaning there is limited movement they can make without losing defensive benefits. Their job is to keep access to the road to Eindhoven clear. Royal Dragoon scout and Armoured cars are screening and bofors and similar tubes are situated with the Yanks also. They are expecting reinforcement coming from Entry area A who will support them or at best attack into the flanks of the enemy attempting to take the bridges.

KG Huber comprised of 1035th Grenadier Regiment with 1st and 2nd Battalion and tanks must clear a path and stop reinforcements moving towards Eindhoven.

Plans:

As per my usual approach to solo play, I drew up 3 plans and rolled a die for the Germans and rolled up a couple of plans for the Allied reinforcements [as there appeared to me to be limited options. Namely 1. Attack the German flank via Eerde or 2. race to the bridges and support the 506th and 501st.

The germans took the notion to advance en masse via Eerde, secure Kempken and Apenhoef and then advance upon the Southern most bridge at Schopenriek. 1st Bn would skirt the raised road and threaten the bridge to the north keeping the defenders in place.

Which as we can see above is going to create a meeting engagement as the plan rolled up has the US advancing smack into the Germans upon arrival. This will be a short game.

The Dragoons call in effective arty fires. So much so that it drives first Bn of plan and they head for the woods to avoid being targeted by the Scouts, as their fires against them continued to be ineffective. The lessons of movement in the open never grow old or any less painful when it comes to accurately placed arty on foot sloggers.
