Something to think about while you sip a Beverage.
I am playing a new game. A new system. It is called Crossing the Line :Aachen 1944.
Now lets not fuss about the game mechanics too much for the moment. Rather lets look at a tactical challenge the German forces have been presented.
But be aware of this much ; the game provides for an initiative roll after each formation activation. With a sliding scale of DRMs for the bloke who didnt activate so he/she gets a chance to activate. Once you win an activation you will get a variable number of action points to spend moving units and or attacking among other things.
In my play 9th Div took the opportunity to flank and advance quickly as the very first activation, stepping across the WestWall and threatening 116th Pz.:
Next the US won the 2nd activation for the 2nd Ops Phase [each activation is deemed an Ops Phase]. They advanced the 3rd Armoured to the Siegfried Line or West Wall what ever you like to call it. I forget which it was. Wait.. Siegfried was WW1!! So they advance upon the WestWall. The US intention is to take III/32 & 33 and use them to support the 9th Inf.
Now with a +4 DRM on the initiative roll the Germans are up for the 3rd Ops Phase. This is where the tactical problem evolves. What should they do?
See below:
Obviously each formation could do a number of things. 116th could strike at 1/47 from 9th Inf Division. Or move to block/slow down/defend at the Westwall? :
Similarly the 9th has a number of choices. Pressing forward. Or do we hang back? The dragons teeth [westwall] take a full turn to cross. The entire Southern sector is much more open, and units appear to be out of position. If massing all inon the 9th was an option that might prove interesting. The 353rd Infantry formation also has some choices. Hang tight looking for a way to flank and cut supply or move more centrally.
What would you do?
Keep sipping that beer…
I think 9th US Inf. Div should have only a Formation Activation Level of 1 left, so they are not the biggest threat. I would either put as much of the units screening Aachen into Improved Defense or transfer Initiative to the US player to see what he will do. Btw, dragon’s teeth cost one whole Movement Action, but the same units can have several Movement Actions in a row, so this is no sfe position for the whole turn. Otherwise, 116th is in a relatively good position…
