Rising Eagles [solo]

Austrian Russo forces plan is predicated upon seeking positions at the river quickly. Then guarding the Right flank by capturing Santon Hill.

French Plan:

Phase 1 of the French plan is to a confuse the enemy, then b, smash from North to South. Once V Corps takes Goldbach Hill then it will secure the supply hex, and flags. Meanwhile Grenadiers, 1 Corps and Imperial Gd will march across the plain led by the entire Reserve Cav Corps. D’Erlon will hold as best he can and delay any push by the Advance Guard and Left Wing Columns. Note that the IV Corps order should be at Pratze not the river village.

Whereas the Coalition, has to break the left, and hold on the right. Hope in the center!

Here we go:

0600 AG, 1st Column and 3rd Column move.

0700 AG, 1C,2C and 3C move. The French make adjustments with Davout. Then 3C, Right Wing [RW] and 4C move. Finally Davout takes a 2nd activation, moving himself 1 hex.

0800 arrives and a marginal lifting of the fog means forces can now see 3 hexes or approximately 6oo m. A 10 then a 9 is required to end the turn. [after each activation 2d6 are rolled if it is 10 or higher then the turn ends marker is flipped. Each activation thereafter if a 9 or higher is rolled then the full game turn ends. So you don’t know how long you will have to execute your turn in full. LAnnes wisely pushes cav out early and forward.

AG and several others fail their activation rolls. French successfully activate IV Corps and they spot 3rd Column dummies near Girsikowitz.

Lannes and Bagration both spot each other and deploy units. They both activate.

RU Guard move and its turn end!!! That was quick. Lots of strategic movement by both sides for all units who did not move or moved just once.

0900

Lannes gets the initiavtive and moves south of Sinitz towards Goldbach Heights.

Advance Guard moves up. These guys are going so slow….Coalition is being too cautious.

Reserve Cav moves behind Santon Hill. The Grenadiers expose themselves and the Right Wing activate leaving Arty to cover its rear with two regiments. They advance upon Bosenitz and Santon.

5th Jaeger loses a step due to opportunity fire, and 64th Ligne and Arty stack fire at Vielle Ingrie to no effect. In the ensuing melee at 2:1 with net 0 DRM a 10 is rolled this means the defender chooses who is reduced!

A Cav charge generates 1:1 QFT/QFT – dual morale checks, both pass.

Soult activates and exposes 3Column, 4Column moves.

Lannes feeling punchy, takes a 2nd activation and attacks!

In the defensive fire phase Lannes is forced to take cover! But survives a Leader kill/wound die roll. The Austrian fire is highly accurate inflicting a step loss and QFT2 morale check. Despite this the 30th,64th and 51st force the retreat of the Jaegers and destroy Vielle whole.

1st Corp movers and this exposes forces at Girzikowitz. Fourth Column for the Soult attacks 7 Jaeger. 2nd Column deploys. Soult’s forces rout Galacia regiment.

1000

Left Wing Third Column moves up, while Soult’s IV attacks and routs elements of 3 Col. Kollorwrath takes Girzikowitz the end turn pops!

1100

4C, attacks!

Kolloworths attack was not done correctly. They had too many factors attacking. Max is 20!

1000 turn ends early!

Wow turn ends are killing this for both sides!

An independent order secures the Flag!

IV Corps pushes back and begins to envelope Pratze!

This attack uses too many factors, but the French…just say ‘such is life’

Order changes the French secure 4.

Noon

France now can change 3 orders to Coalitions 1. This proves to be fatal for the Coalition. They are moribund to their plan.

That will leave a mark! The Austrians stumble badly. Reduction and a +1 on the morale check.

And of course they bloody fail…That might be it on this flank.

Napoleon full of vim and vigour supports an attack.

Bagration, is being beating to a bloody pulp on two flanks and is in disarray

Davout suggest that life would be more fun with a vigourous attack directly at Kienmayer! They thwart the guns, and the Hussards.

Lannes presses but cannot break the Guard du Corps holding the village.

A collapsing Cannae esque formation… But the French will not be lulled.

Another turn end. The Austrian Left a mess. The center on the hieghts collapsing and in the North death and mayhem!

Here comes Murat! It is at this point the Coalition says…yep. Murat. I’m out good for you…you win. Adios mofo.

  1. I need to play this one again after my last play of Ligny giving me a “meh” feeling.
Love the series, but we need some better battles : Waterloo is not very replayable IMO, Ligny leans towards ‘not fun’ for the Prussians, and Austerlitz is pretty solid. 4Bras coming out should be a good battle.

    1. For me Pete it was better than Ligny and Waterloo. The fog of war was apparent, the battle flowed in a historical manner. While the game system supported all the right mechanics.

  2. Hexasim are fast becoming a force in Napoleonic games. I thoroughly enjoy all three of the Eagles Grand Tactical series and Napoleon against Europe is one of my favourites at Grand Strategical level.

    1. Agreed. They capture the essence of Napoleonic combat without the minutiae that turns something interesting into a pageflipping, die rolling mess.
