On Their Own /1.4

Lets continue with Last Hundred Yards and pick up the story from HERE :

Garvin and his squad fail to keep the Germans in place. They do however take a toll on the moving enemy forces. Looking around, Garvin see the real intent of the Germans.

“Break contact, lets go men lets go!! ” He roars. “The damage done here will have to be enough. Lets go help Rothberg!”

Over by the Church, cold wind whistles in through bullet holes in doors, and stained glass windows. The men hunker down. Unbelievably the Germans push at them again. But this time they have a lot of supporting fire from the woods. Glass, wood and stone chips fly about the GI’s.

Garvin, leads his men back to Rothberg’s location at the hurry up! He can see the Germans making a cautious advance across the road. >

Jackson meanwhile is hunkered down with his men. ” Well fellas here they come again. Lets keep their heads down!”

Get more fire onto that church!! Keep their heads down! Screams Lang. His losses are mounting and he cannot believe how resilient these damnable Americans are being. The attack must surely succeed this time!

The assault by ½ squad goes poorly, as Langs men could not apply enough suppressing fire to keep the GI’s heads down. Once again the Germans retreat.

On the right Rothberg and his men face off, against the approaching Germans. But it is all too much for his men. They crack and cower. Rothberg grimaces and checks his gun one more time. No point berating the men now. Just then Garvin bursts into the back of the building. “Need hand pal?’ says Garvin with a shit eating grin on his face.

The firefight is intense the Germans break into the house, throwing grenades, and forcing Garvin and Rothberg’s men back further and further. They eventually cede the house to the vicious attack.

‘Sehr gut, sehr gut men….’says Rolfe, ‘re load and lets finish this!’

A cry of pain. A man lies in the field near the church. He screams for help in German.

As the half squad or section regrouped. Franz noticed that Hans was not with them.

“THEY KILLED HANS!!!!!”

‘Lets kill them all’, Franz says as he drags 3 or 4 men with him off to avenge his brother in arms death.

“Ahhh…Lt…Sir… you wont believe this” said Tewks. “But they are coming back….not all of them just a small group. But they are coming sir…’

“Right…You have to be shitting me? Seriously. Ok. Let’s kick their asses one more time. Hurry men. As much as I hate it smash out this stained glass and give them hell.” The German advance is channeld by the rock wall and partially shielded by the hedge. But Jackson and his weary men have enough time to take careful shots, despite the suppressive fire coming at them.

The men with Franz died to a man in a hail of rounds.

Using bounding overwatch the Germans, retire from the field. They had had enough. Lang had lost 2 squads in the drive on the church, and bemoaned the lack or artillery or even mortar support let alone AFV’s.

Jackson and his men looked around a bit bewildered. Surrounded, out of position, and on the back foot the GI’s were close to collapse. Rothberg’s men were flanked and isolated too. Yet they had held on. Hung tough and withstood the punches just one punch more than the Germans could take.

  1. You have captured the spirit of the action and these reports. It reads like the old “Commando” comics that I kept under my desk at school for those boring Geography lessons. Well don, Sir!
