NORDKAPP AAR

November, Severe weather. [restricted movement and combat conditions]

However in the opening turn the Soviets will have the opportunity to be used for air transport and attacks in a ‘break in the weather’

Only high capability avionics units can intercept. Soviets bring 4 units on their heavy side and 2 on their light side and air drop, helo into the initial assault.

Marines land

And suffer heavily:

54th Division invades Finland in the South setting up attacks upon the army. Rovaniemi and Vuojarvi are attacked.

The 45th takes Valo with out a fight and head North. They need to do this to secure supply paths for oncoming reinforcements as there are not enough roads OUT of Norway to fully support all Soviet divisions.

The Air support is allocated and then combat ensues.

Finnish aa, collapse and are eliminated.

While eliminated the Finns at Sooakyla forestall the advance but are also unable to prevent anything happen next turn. Two Soviet battalions from the 54th are destroyed.

Kirkenes in the Eastern Coast falls also.

Banak attack by Soviet Airborne is a high risk venture @ 2:1 and fails. No losses for the Norwegian defenders and both Soviet para Bns are wiped out. In the subsequent turn the Norwegians attack and auto kill the helo unit.

Losses turn 1 6 Bns of Soviets and 1 Bn of Norwegians and 2 of Finns. A bloody CRT that is only mitigated by un absorbed losses that allow the attacker to reduce losses if the defender does not have units present to absorb.

NATO, Allied, Norwegian response.

Finnish reinforcement cannot comment until Turn 2. Norwegian units are bounced from reinforcement locations and in fact two units are eliminated in situ with the Para and Naval landings that took Tromso, Evenes and other locales.

The US air and UK air arrives. They seek to support an attack Alta but are thwarted by an overwhelming air response from the Soviets. This forestalls any attack by the Norwegians.

Not so in Evenes the lone Soviet Marine battalion is wiped out at a heavy cost of 2 full battalions of Norwegian patriots. Most of these are VP locations so we need to clear them…and we need to roll better!

It would also appear that there is some sloppy wording for Finnish reinforcements that may only enter by rail, but swedes may enter by rail or road. This effectively means USSR can block any entrance of reinforcement with single unit at the sole rail entrance area. We will likely house rule that unless there is some reasonable justification for it.

On to turn 2

  1. GREAT close-up photo of all those counters (especially since they’re non-clipped and grognard APPROVED)!

This is one of those S&Ts that has “sleeper hit” status. It’s on an obscure topic, and it’s older than the hills (or the fjords), but I hear it mentioned fairly often.
