Kiev ’41

In the past Vento Nuovo has been the little block wargame company that struggled to get air time, had swings in success – Blocks in the East sold over 1800 copies as their first run release followed by the less popular but still interesting Blocks in the West.  The companies, art was derided by some. The Rules translations were spotty. Now…. Now they are the real deal, they fund almost instantly and are currently almost at 200% of goal.
So I spent a LOT of time working through the challenges, spoke to the designer frequently and helped where I could. They were doing amazingly different things – Goretex mega maps, latex stickers that are waterproof, waterproof maps, multiple sets of stickers, and lots of add ons. So very cool.

Innovation, new ideas, and creativity are needed in our niche. I am a fan of the level of abstraction, of the now refined and more controlled art, of the rulebooks whose English is now about 95% perfect. I’m also a fan of the number of different systems, the number of creative ways the team [yes they are a team now! not just a man and his cat] has brought the overall historicity of the situation represented in the designs to life as well as making the games highly playable and re-playable.

Waterloo an amazing design, Stalingrad such a fine and clever Solo AI. But probably the most well know ‘series’ of Vento Nuovo is the ’41 series. Where they look at Moscow [AGC], Leningrad [AGN] and now AGS – Kiev ’41!

I just backed it.

There are just 45 hours to go in the kickstarter. I’ve eased up on promoting the little block company that could, not because they are no longer may favorite block game company, just more that they really don’t need me for anything. They have great products, excellent customer service and they deliver early on every Kickstarter. Plus they support the hell out of their games on BGG.Take a look, you might find something you like.
