Hellespont 321 BC Part 1

After Alexanders death [see videos about the post Alexander rift between Eumenes and Craterus here & here ] prominent leaders jockeyed for position and power.

Sadly, even dear friends ended up on opposing sides. Craterus and Eumenes are two such people. This is their story.

Craterus led his army from the Hellespont to engage Eumenes who had broken the faith with the 5.

He had never the less been miss informed about the readiness and capabilities of Eumenes.

Greek faces off against Greek.

Eumenes, wily and manipulative sets his cavalry on his left with orders to quickly charge Craterus and not let him engage with the Phalanx. For he knew most if not all would not raise a sarrisa against him.

Persian cavalry loyal to Eumenes lead this charge. Historically it is here that Craterus fell, his horse speared, and he is trampled underfoot…but lives until near the end of the battle.

Nepotolemus who brought to poor intelligence to Craterus, also struggles in his first engagements against Eumenes. Who had defeated him just a few days prior. Meanwhile in the center skirmishers close on each other and the fight is evenly matched.

As we can see the Eumenid cavalry has the upper hand while the Phalanx forces close on one another.

As turn 2 evolves the battle on Craterus’s right becomes ugly and swirling. We can imagine dust and dirt kicked up, spear thrusts and the cries of pain, as both sides seek to garner advantage.
