Fire & Ice

Well… I did it. I went ahead and Pre Ordered Korea Fire & Ice  .

I’ve vacillated long enough.

It is a Divisional system with 7 mile hexes, one week turns with the acronym for a name : OSS. Standing for the Operational Scale System. Korea: Fire & Ice is the first title.

Its one I’m interested in and also nervous about. ‘New Systems’ usually take some serious shaking out, before they are solid and stable. The current CSS from Adam Starkweather being no exception. But after reading the rules online  [link to my BigBoard GDrive, or surf around CSW for a copy ] and giving the game some consideration, it would seem to me that there is enough “new” stuff; fresh ideas, alternate approaches to the tried and true [read same old shit re packaged] to warrant an exploration.

This is said with hope and aspiration for AWESOME!

I don’t mind a good old fashioned wargame, – Move, Shoot, Supply etal. BUT!!! it sure is refreshing when people look to innovation, look to smart design choices, look to better end user  interface with the maps and rules to present something FRESH.

For example here we have a well laid out combat example above and part 2 below:

Something NEW for us to chew on, consider and experience.

Perhaps it is the plethora of SPI titles I’ve played recently with the un ending sameness and creaky age. Yes, fun in their day, yes even innovative for its time and place. But today, coming back to them it is nostalgia that holds my attention, not historical rigour, or amazing narrative, or comprehensive game play. They are just ok for the most part and often stinkers.

Lately we have been blessed with some very solid new game systems. Lets hop Adam hits a home run with this!

  1. I’d been eyeballing it, but with VG Korea on the shelf (which I’ve had fun with) I was not sure I needed ‘more Korea’. I’ll be interested to see how it pans out, however.
