Campaign of Nations Quick Notes

Some quick thoughts on Campaign of Nations from @Hollandspiele.  This title is set during the very interesting Leipzig campaign in 1813.  Napoleon was of course defeated, despite having his enemy spread across a large geography.

Wiki’s say this:

The Battle of Leipzig or Battle of the Nations (RussianБитва народов, Bitva narodov; German: Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig; French: Bataille des Nations, Swedish: Slaget vid Leipzig) was fought from 16 to 19 October 1813, at LeipzigSaxony. The coalition armies of RussiaPrussiaAustria, and Sweden, led by Tsar Alexander I of Russia and Karl Philipp, Prince of Schwarzenberg, decisively defeated the French army of Napoleon IEmperor of the French. Napoleon’s army also contained Polish and Italian troops, as well as Germans from the Confederation of the Rhine. The battle was the culmination of the German campaign of 1813 and involved 600,000 soldiers, 2,200 artillery pieces, the expenditure of 200,000 rounds of artillery ammunition and 127,000 casualties, making it the largest battle in Europe prior to World War I.

Decisively defeated for the first time in battle, Napoleon was compelled to return to France while the Coalition kept up their momentum, dissolving the Confederation of the Rhine and invading France early the next year. Napoleon was forced to abdicate and was exiled to Elba in May 1814.

So. a total bummer for the Frenchies eh?

Well this game may well allow you to explore some what ifs. There is indeed a large set of forces on both sides, but each force is fragile in its own way. As what I would call an operational or uber grand tactical game there are a significant number of abstractions. So die hard square formers beware, this aint your game.

If however you wish to explore the what if’s the whys and the wherefores of the action this might be a very good way to understand more. David Chandlers Chapter on the Battle of Nations readily shows just how challenged Napoleon was, despite some disorderly efforts by the Coalition. It has been interesting so far. More later on as we progress.

A blow by blow description of the battle can be found here:

  1. Chandler’s work is still the seminal account of the Campaigns and a must have on the shelf of anyone who really wants to dig into the era.
