North Africa ’41 Turn 4

The top of turn 4 continued from  [Turn1-3] Steve is the Axis, I am running the Commonwealth:
North Africa 41
May I Impulse One.

As most of you probably know having read the rules or at least skimmed a pdf of them each side within each turn receives three impulses, except in the Summer when there are just two.

You are not mandated to move or attack, in fact you will receive bonus supply if you do not. However, there is always something to do.

The Allies always go first.

They roll for their random event and do not receive any rsources points yet again. But do manage to secure another bombing run on the only available port to hit, Benghazi.

They roll like a boss and drop the capacity to zero. The game plan here is to deny the second airfield VP location for the entire turn if possible. The Axis, are at zero supply other than the DAK marker and have been very cautious. Clearing the rear areas. I have left puling the Aussies out north of Benghazi too long and they will likely be cornered in rough terrain. We decide to send battalions of motorized infantry and 7th Hussars to aid the slowing of the DAK machine. While 3rd Indian situates it self west of Knightsbridge, supported by 5th Royal Tank regiment [reduced ].

I have no resource point to support further fortifications anywhere which is a significant problem. So the option here has to be to bleed with units. It feels very much like Stalingrad ’42 from that perspective. Where a constant stream of low quality low capability units can sometimes get the job done in buying time.

Extended movement always surprises me for some damn reason in this game. One minute the Axis is across the desert next totally up in my grill. Our soon to be OOS Aussies, force a step loss and take one as well. The Guys near Derna also force a loss and take one as well. The Ariete division forces a retreat of the Hussars.

Cat and mouse endeavours ensue, suffice to say the Axis, effectively push back the allies using no supply based attacks [capping all attacks at 9 strength, and no tank shifts, but they still receive all Elite and or arty bonus’s etc.] ,

They also finally kill the isolated Aussies, and the Derna based Aussies are forced to abandon the Martuba airfield on the last Impulse! Giving up a VP. We make a brief counter attack using air, and arty to only end up with a DR2….

We end the turn then with the Axis losing one more VP not two, for a net -2, with a run rate of 3 required.

At the Top of MAY II [turn5]  we have the following situation knowing that I still have NO resource points rolled. But the Allies do have 2 air support chits. The Axis have 3 resources and air support. They still maintain air superiority.

You can see 5th Light pressing in on Tobruk, along with Regiments from 15th Panzer. With the rest staged to push on Tobruk or bypass. In the supply attrition Phase I lose one SP in Alexandria and the Axis lose one also, dropping them down to 1 both of which were headed to resupply the offensive! So great timing.
The Question now is can we hold the next two airfields and prevent the Axis from regaining VPs each turn and hold Tobruk as launching pad for a major offensive after the summer.
