2021 What will you play?

For me I’m expecting a restricted year for gaming. Probably no cons other than some fun in St Louis. Probably more limited time at the table, due to a new role professionally.

But my bucket list of titles I desire to play in no particular order is as follows, but starting with games already under way or about to be started:

DAKII campaign continuation.

Finish up what’s left of the campaign for Ariete [Done! As of 28th December]

GBACW scenario exploration continuation, which is going very slowly.

Probably a Vassal session of Stalingrad ’42.

Start or continue Black Swan from Vento Nuovo Games and continue DC: Kandahar from Hollandspiele.

Oh!! Continue my most interesting exploration of Carrier!

Now as I mentioned on Whiskey Charlie the other night  I have a hankering for a big game experience burning in my gut.

I’m leaning heavily towards one of two games. Either Under an Iron Sky OR Guderian’s Blitzkrieg II for some serious campaign action. If its GBII I’d like to find a later starting scenario maybe:

7.4 Operation Typhoon Campaign Start IV8 Jan 42—Stalin’s General Offensive: This scenario starts the campaign after the successful limited objective Moscow Counter-Offensive with the much larger Front-wide offensive ordered by Stalin.”

If I go for Under an Iron Sky, I wonder if I can combine the DNL southern Map and play with that?

That said, Death Ride Arras or a re try of Salerno is on the cards, a long with that train wreck Deluxe Desert Fox. Im sure there are good games in these systems as well as TSWW’s Battle Axe which is still giving me trouble with the order of battle and how all the counters work. It cannot be that hard.

I have read the rules for Pacific Fleet a while back and have not played. I think it is managable and would make a nice way to revisit the Pacific while people tryin and fix War in the Pacific or await Pacific War by Mark Herman.

A recently arrived title is being added to the list. Looks interesting but I’m nervous about the translation having seen an error or two in the first few sentances.

Then I guess there are a swag of games that will be played just because – starting with LNLP’s Lock’N Load Tactical, WAW 85 and GMT’s Great Battles of History series.

Another GMT title that deserves table time will be the new Vietnam title for their near future series : Next War. Come June, if I can convince a few locals, I’d love to run the full campaign of Battle for Normandy again, or even run that on Vassal opposed.

I owe Academy Games a play thru of COH! I’d like to run thru Hornet Leader from DVG quickly as well as another solitaire titles that I have prepped and ready to play – Ranger. If opposed play becomes an options Jaws of Victory and The Last Stand are two games that will be returning to the table also.

Many of you might recall, that I have chronological walk thru of WWII still underway. I think its taking way longer than the real war! I will be updating my posts for that in the New Year and assessing where we are at. I was well mire din 1943 with East Front conflicts, and then skipped forward to Jun3 1944 with Western Theater actions. So its time to update everything and close that series of posts out.

I have Quatre Bras from COA out to look at, as well as the Epic of the Peloponnesian War. Settling on a rule set seems to be the first choice for COA’s La Battaille series. DG’s Wellingtons Victory really deserves another look also, and I still have Napoleon Against Europe staring at me!

As far as the ACW goes, I have a desire to really understand the tactical aspects and as such besides GBACW I will try and find time to finally watch Nick Rosers channel and learn Line of Battle. But I fear my heart is more warmed by the operational scale so if I can find a campaign with Great Campaigns of the ACW that is not rife with special rules and exceptions then I’d love to put a big multi mapper up.

Without even thinking too much there are a twenty or so titles that will hopefully all hit the table in 2021. A great place to start given my limited time. In 2020 we got nearly 50 new games on the table, and 75+ sessions in, so a dozen titles, some of them large seems like a challenging and achievable goal. One thing I know we all suffer from, is the shiny new thing syndrome. I hope to be just a little more disciplined this year and try and run some games or at least publish game play on and around the actually dates they occurred in history and not let new arrivals bump my schedule so much.

Famous last words.

Chime in, and share your hopes and dreams for Board Wargames this year!

Also, look for an upcoming video on my best & worst of 2020.

  1. For me this hobby competes for time/energy with two others (playwriting, Arabic language study being the other 2). That said I was surprised I played so many different games in 2020.

Going into 2021 I own some popular games/series (for wargames) that I have not played and I want to cross off the list. To wit, COH, Combat Commander, Undaunted Normandy, Nations at War, Great Battles of Alexander. A few that I played in 2020 I want to continue with, like OST, and Napoleon 1806 /1807 from Shakos.

Also, I cannot deny my favorite games to play are the C&C Napoleonics series and Tide of Iron series, with all the expansions. So I will embrace this without shame and probably get away from hex and counter stuff.

I have a handful of pre-orders bound to show up throughout 2021: Russian Campaign, War and Peace, C&C Samurai, and some I have probably forgotten about.

Finally, I gotta get rid of some of this stuff…

  2. Also, in 2020 I tried to love Pub Battles. I really tried. I like Marengo. Otherwise it’s been a slog with changes to the rules, including some that I only accidentally stumbled across in a YouTube comment (!?). I’m not getting rid of what I have, because I don’t know how I would ship those big tubes. So in 2021 I will revisit again…

  3. Hello Kev, apart from development work for LnL (tactical China 37-39 module, WaW series….), GMT (Carl Paradis’ games) and TRL (Festung Hamburg) I also really want to continue exploring Under an Iron Sky, ideally launching a full campaign – opposed…..

      1. A wargaming man’s gotta do what a wargaming man’s gotta do 😀 I think you’re really gonna dig the Chinese module. It will be quite different from what people are used to.

  4. I made it thru about 60% of my “2020 game list”, but a mix of new games arriving (after I told myself to limit purchases), laziness, tinkering with minis, and a 1-year old ate into my time. I did mange to sell several games as well, but I think it was a net-zero due to purchases. Oh and I reorganized my game room / shelves for about the 10th time in the last 2-3 years! hahah

    1. It’s funny how shelf reorganization inspiration can strike at any time!

      1. Right?! I feel like I can find more space by rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic here…
