Abu Hamed y 1897 British-Sudan Wars
During British reconquest of the Sudan, General Sir Herbert Kitchener sent a flying col-umn of British and Sudanese troops under General Sir Archibald Hunter forward from Merowi against the Nile rail head at Abu Hamed.
The Mahdist troops were driven out, with 300 killed and commander Muhammad al-Zayn captured, and Kitchener continued on towards the Atbara (7 August 1897).
