Golan Heights map. The first game using his “Days of Battle” tactical simulation system, renowned designer Frank Chadwick’s Golan Heights recreates the desperate armored fight along the Israeli-Syrian border during the 1973 “Yom Kippur War.” Explore one of history’s most famous tank battles, as both sides will find themselves facing daunting challenges. For the Israeli player, an early struggle to slow the wave of Syria’s Russian armor becomes a question of balancing when to begin counterattacks. For the Syrian player, the goal is to attack with the greatest speed possible to seize objectives before Israeli reserves arrive to tip the balance, and then to hold on to early gains, while looking for an opening to regain momentum and strike again.
Terrain and time-of-day meld in an elegant simulation of the issues faced by front line commanders and the challenges inherent with both fast-paced assaults and the pressures of maintaining a viable defense against long odds. Event cards provide subtle operational and tactical opportunities and setbacks, and combat counters are brigade and battalion level, organized by division.
The “Days of Battle” system forces the player to fight one type of warfare during the day, and then adapt to the difficulties of night warfare, where assumptions are turned on their heads. Golan Heights presents it all in a concise, elegant system that is quick to learn, yet forever challenging to master.
Believe it or not, I’m currently on the play test team for this game and it is great little game from Frank Chadwick. The game is a blast to play with plenty of decisions to be made each turn by both players. I’m honored to be able to contribute even a little bit to this project. Check it out if you get the chance, you won’t be sorry!
