Hmm Im not seeing the video link here: here it is again: https://youtu.be/qjMiWzPasfs
So I had the chance to play with this game for a bit. You can see way more extensive coverage elsewhere. Firstly thank you tho, to the developer team for inviting me to play and review the game. I did have some fun with it.
But to be honest this was not a game for me.
But it might be for you!
I think however if you like games in the vein of Hannibal Rome vs Carthage, you will like this title.
You will also like it if you want to explore in an abstract manner the Greek Civil War and the pivotal role this siege played in it, then for sure take a look.
While there is immense replay value given the deck sizes, it was a bit slow for me. I also found that with certain card combos in hand the besieged Greeks face a harrowing time mid game.
There is a sense too of futility sometimes as one side will tear down the external support areas only to see most of the flip due to card play. So you can call that dynamic or something else upon reflection. Now that of course is a choice the player must make and one that adds flavor, so I mention that only due to it happening at least twice and being a real downer…lol.
The interplay and choices you make are interesting and have some layers to them. However unlike say a Marcus Auerlius or a Agricola – Master of Rome style game, where one choice directly impacts some other aspect of play, you are more choosing between or among best option based on scarcity of resources. Rarely will a decision be the ‘wrong’ thing. Nor will it directly and immediately give the enemy the upper hand on some other part of the board.
Finally a quick note on the play test board.
It is very dark. Some icons are not clear to read or see and I think the art work on the board could be ‘lifted a little’.
Overall its interesting, plays reasonably quickly and will no doubt be successful.
Excellent. Finally a reviewer not afraid to say a game didn’t quite hit the mark for them. More importantly you explain why which gives better insight into the mechanics of play. I am actually more likely to look at other comments and get a broader perspective of this game then dismiss it out of hand. Thanks!
