That’s the thing about MBT; position is everything. Beating one’s opponent in time, space, and forces is a huge deai–mounting threats to the most dangerous defensive/overwatch positions before the enemy occupies it can be a major challenge. Once the enemy is there, it’s really hard to survive moving out of cover in line of sight of those positions. I’ve played quite a few games where we called it a draw because neither player wanted to “stick his neck out” into the lion’s mouth!
I also advocate playing with the Bail Out rules, the NATO acquisition rules, as well as the Command and Morale rules. Variable penetration rules also add a good bit of uncertainty, especially when the penetration versus armor comparison is pretty close at certain ranges and angles!
