It’s hard yakka chasing gooks thru the bloody bush.
The two Matilda’s roars to life, and pelt down the trail, men grip the rails on the rear, and eat exhaust fumes.
On the run, the VC race for the village to their bolt holes and tunnels that promise safety, those left behind to screen, know they will likely die.
Unseen the VC stalk the tanks. Sniper fire careens off the hull of the lead tank. Men duck for cover.
Lt Lovell and his men close in on the cowering VC, who are suppressed by the twin MG’s of the Mark V.
Its a trap! The RPG tears thru the M113.
Closer to the village now; the VC leaders urge their men to safety. The Aussies turn to spring a trap.
Details:
With a vengeance they open up on the wily VC. In the distance black smoke roils the jungle canopy. The Aussies know that mates are dead and dying. It fuels their weary bodies. Enraged some charge forward in a blood lust.
Calm fire from the enemy and vicious close in fighting kills an entire squad of Aussies caught in the open.
The Aussies calm down, knowing that the last tank has taken out the RPG, but wont be to the village in time to make a difference. But they have a further surprise for the VC.
Claymores or M-18’s jammed packed with body rending ball bearings and explosives.
The enemy leader is wounded as they rush for the tunnels. Dying at the bolt hole the VC realize they cannot escape in force, they instead exact a heavy toll on the hard pressed Aussie force.
A thread bare Aussie win is recorded.
