Understand your frustration, but the BGG Files for the game will help you a great deal with this. Much depends on which scenario/campaign you are playing.
I guess I need my glasses for font and sit and find out which formation has what counters. The notations format on the counters are unfamiliar
Most wargames have a loooong way to go to be user-friendly for set-up. They mostly rely on jargon and code and abbreviations that are hurdles to overcome. GTS is generally not better or worse that other series I’ve played like OCS or SCS. At least some OCS and SCS games might come with a set up sheet or two.
I think you used the key word here; “familiar.” One has to be familiar with the syntax used. One has to be familiar with the OOB. The more familiar you are the easier it is. Too much is placed on the player though to work it out.
