A learning game of Hexasim’s Rising Eagles game focussed on tactical combat in the Napoleonic era. This was played in preparation for a face to face session:
The Austrian-Russian Coalition approaches the apparently demoralized and dis organized French forces approaching Telnitz, and Sokolnitz. Heavy fog covered their approach, but also made for a confusing approach and led to uncertainty as to exact dispositions.
The Austrians have locale superiority, in numerical terms and number of cannon. But their forces are not a cohesive nor rated as strongly for morale. While it may seem like a modest difference 6 rated units on a 1d10 roll will have challenges surviving Morale rolls versus the higher rated French units who generally are 7 and 8 rated.
By the end of 0700 period Kienmayer had begun his approach to Telnitz, but was strung out along the road.
Doctorov’s forces fire their Arty, and attempt to close. But the Horse Arty and Infantry dug into Telnitz repulse the effort routing the enemy. At the southern end of Telnitz a similar story evolves.
Grenz and Hussard are repulsed with losses.
A second assault earns unfavourable results with a wholesale retreat and disruption of forces pressing in on the attack. Several units take 50% casualties. In the meantime to the North the 1st Corp advances on the village of Sokolnitz, while # corps swings north.
The results of the last assault are 4 steps lost and several routed units.
The key is timing your assaults and levering combined arms effectively. This is particularly hard to do in the fog and difficult terrain.
We wrap it up here and conclude that we are ready to hit the campaign face to face in just a few weeks. [played in May 2019 ish].
