GDW 1200 Series : Alma Pictorial overview

GDW’s Frank Chadwick title has been around for a long time. The 120 series shows its age. While a fast playing game with a few subtleties built in via the Morale system it struggle to capture the essence of the battle for me at least.

If you can pick it up cheap do it, but set your game play and historical assessments at a suitably low level. These are not meant to be simulations by any stretch, I was just hoping a little more.

During this battle not a lot went right for either side. But gritty British fighting men and excellent French formations carried the day at cost.

Brits closed quickly, and we take all the cavalry and route them to the right flank of the British lines.

Due to movement cost the French find the approach a lot slower, and suffer mildly under accurate Russian arty..

The French clear the center.

The main road advance will prove troublesome for the Brits with several units forced to retreat or eliminated.

The french fare better as we evolve a cadence to the attacks, and the far right wing is open ground and the French press past un opposed:

The hills and slopes prove a challenge under arty fires, so teh Brits bring their arty to bear and use combined arms to press home the attack.

At great cost.

French losses mount.

As the French break through the line the French prepare to sweep the Russians away. While the British clear their far left flank and break through the middle causing a general rout.
