Cornered Cats AAR

July 15th 1944. Operation Bagration pushes west with a fury. units from 14th SS and 1st Panzer Divisions are isolated in a section of Brody. The Germans are battle hardened but are running low on supplies. The Russian 4th Tank army moves in for the kill.

This scenario uses the Stalingrad map from OST, Old School Tactical. It uses the bombed out buildings for a defensive situation set in 1944 for the Germans against an overwhelming Soviet force in Brody.

Opening:
The bedraggled, weary fighters hunkered down in the bombed out remnants of the township. Smouldering fires, soldiers scrounged scraps of wood, window frames, doors were long gone, even structural framing to burn for and cooking.

There had been two attacks today and for sure another would arrive soon enough. The sun beat down on helmets.

Then the distinctive rumble of T-34s and unfortunately also the grinding frightening vibration of behemoth KV-1’s. swarms of infantry could be seen moving behind the T-34s, cautiously peeking around the tracks and turrets. Hunched over, tight grips on their rifles. But others had more swagger. They were the sapper and vets who had seen it all a 100 times and yet had still survived. Welcome to hell thought the German SS troopers, welcome to hell of our making.

Heavy rifle fire is exchanged and the large squads or Russkies pepper the defenders, to keep heads down. Tanks advance down the street with a ponderous crunch across broken glass, brick and stone.

Feeling better about their chances crossing the plaza with the slackening of the German fire, two squads race into the open and attempt to close assault the building. Another squad pops up and cuts down the enemy.

The SS Lt looks about and sees Sappers approaching with flame throwers. No one wants to be cooked alive. It’s a fearful weapon. In a moment of panic he orders his men into the fray. Taking the sappers by surprise. They cut them down in the broken building. Blood soaks into the floorboards.

The Pak 38 long barrel team are not enthused with their position. But they execute their job regardless. They await a flank shot on the rumbling KV-1. Its the only way to do any damage at all. CRAK! The Gun recoils and the men spring into well worn routine of reloading and immediately firing again. Know 1 shot is never enough.

The KV-1 continues its unstoppable journey, but its main gun sags apparently inoperable from a lucky shot!

SS troopers close assault the tank and finish it off. Others take sniping shots at advancing infantry, separating them from their rolling cover.

The Tiger tanks 88m ranges the platoon of T-34s racing down the street and engages out of the T-34s effective range. They splash one then another of the Soviet tanks. This throws the advance into chaos.

Damaged tanks see no quarter as the Sergeant encourages his men to finish off the tanks but not before taking losses.

The Soviet attack stalls again. The Germans are however heavily battered and have fallen back to a tighter perimeter. IF another large assault comes can they survive?
