Berlin ’85 Progress update

Berlin ’85.

Funny how impressions come running back to you. As we play turn two, I’m struck how German Uber companies are taking out whole mechanized battalions on the streets of Berlin. Its all a bit of a lark.

The disingenuous CRT doesn’t even try to hide its bias to build a game that is mildly fun for the NATO side at the expense of the Russkies killing capability. Its all good fun and you accept it for what it is, or was.

Below Top of Turn 3.

In the British sector after hiding in ruins created by savage and in the end pointless bombardments.

The French are yet to feel the weight of much action. In the south the US retreat gracefully at the expense of 6 WG police companies that have cost 5 Bns of Mechanized Soviets.

One thing this is clever here is the Honors of War rules that may force the NATO side to surrender, but that is subject to a die roll and current VP total.

Note that asking and failing costs Soviets 20VP’s and winning too soon, means you don’t have enough VP’s to gather a marginal or better victory.

  1. I liked and like this game, but even back in the day I knew the Modern Battles system (which relies on outflanking for its effectiveness) was wrong for an urban battle. Even if they hadn’t thought of something new, the Central Front system with its Friction Points was available then and would have worked better.
