Deadly Northern Lights Turn 2 Game play continues. See Prior Posts Here
BREAKING NEWS….CNN:
“that’s right Karen, sources inside the The Hague confirm that NATO has given the green light for both deadly chemical weapons and environmentally unsafe nuclear weapons!! NATO had no comment other than to say it was their belief that the Soviets have also approved chemical weapon use.
This dangerous escalation by NATO is another clear sign that the US is hell bent on all out war instead of localized battle for the small countries of Denmark and Norway.
This reporter spoke to the Soviet Politburo had stated that it is very concerned about protecting the environment sources inside the Kremlin say and would not use Chemical weapons or nukes …..unless provoked. CNN reporter Ivan Ivanovich reporting.”
DEADLY NORTHERN LIGHTS- game mechanic:
Turn 2 Soviets had chemical weapon release T1. NATO now has chemical and nuke weapons free.
Turn 2
External Events Phases:
In the Greenland Iceland-UK gap both sides pile on. The Soviets stretched thin, cannot afford an LST and troops to invade Iceland ….this…turn…. but their long range air and heavy naval presence interdict air reinforcements and sink troop transports…..turn 2 ASIW result, meaning that Soviet subs are playing havoc with shipping forcing a step loss. Any and all Air Transfers are doing to hit boxes expended not fresh. Plus, NATO loses a step. Fortunately, however with no ground troops the Soviets do not take complete control of Iceland.
Schleswig-Holstein Front. Fierce efforts by the weary NATO fighter pilots stave off the push by East German and Soviet forces. [ note the GI-UK units ferried last turn] forcing 1 NATO step for 2 WP steps lost.
Air Superiority over the Narvik area:
Break Room Evenes Airbase #308
‘ Marvelous yes, did you see those crazy Swedes in the JA 37’s chase off the Floggers and Flankers!’ Said the British pilot, just alittle too excitedly, and rapidly. ‘That was a timely intervention if I dare say. And where the bloody hell did those Foxhounds come from? All of a sudden bloody missile locks all over the place. I never saw a damn thing. ” His colleague Smithers passed the kettle to him.
The talkative pilot named Vallance began rapidly making tea, absent minded, putting 3 or more sugars in, splashing milk in and all around….Stirring furiously.
” Tho I think Smithers got one ‘eh Smithers? Bloody nice missile hit there old boy! Shook the buggers up I dare say.’
As he raised his steaming hot mug of tea to his lips…the mug shook violently. He looked around….He thought to himself, yes. Lucky that time. But I’ve got to go up again in two hours. How will we beat these bastards? We are too few, and they have better, fast higher climbing kit than us. We need an edge.
Smithers gave Vallance a wink and a smile, ‘ Don’t worry old boy! We are all scared too! Lets rely on our training and new found warrior friends the Norwegians to carry the day. Oh and pray a lot if you care to it might help!’
EYES ONLY AIRCOM:
Fighter after action reels show Soviet tactics.
Rapid analysis required of Foxhound capabilities.
Analysis question: is the 31, a better airframe or are Norwegians not taking advantage of our technology?
Analysis question: do pilots require further training?
Note extend range capability of Mig 31, this is new data. Ceiling higher than reported. Speed higher than reported.
Note g’s pulled +4
Rate of climb: 288 m/s these exceeds expected thresholds.
Suspect new arrays and targeting systems.
STOP.
The Battle for Tromso
61st Marine, after landing and consolidating forces, marches towards the key port of Tromso. Its vital that it be taken this turn to enable basic supply of Fuel and ammo for the trek inland. 2North, a mere Battalion or so of men have been doing their best to protect the populace, many of which have spread out to neighbouring isles or left and preparing to make the Soviets pay for every building in this urban area of tight narrow streets, heavily built buildings and hills covered in snipers.
In game terms this would be a Small Scale Combat or SSC. Note the pink and blue text. This means any support used receives a 50% bump in effectiveness. Thus I used too many aircraft in these following images. I adjusted this after the fact, which made this combat execution make much more sense.
The Soviets bring the 874th Regiment of 61st Marine up the hill and have them position over the town ship. Their first airstrike called in is devastating, and the 874th are somewhat sickened by the destruction wrought on this idyllic looking town. Buildings ablaze, rubble everywhere. But they advance cautiously nevertheless having been repulsed by their hasty assault earlier in the week they now take their time.
Sniper shots ring out, mortars fire. After two hours of fighting the 874th has been fought to a standstill across the causeway. Reinforcements are called for. The 875th advances, fresh and ready to rock. An additional wing of Mig 27M [Floggers] wings swept back rocket through the air low and fast dropping their 500kg loads, avoiding the weakened flak, their six barrel 30mm cannons tearing into the housing for good measure on a second pass.
The 875th inflict heavy casualties:
The Norwegians seek no parley, with ammo running low, and 50% casualties they grimly hold on.
The 875th attacks again, finally clearing the town after yet another barrage of air power.
With the port secured. Supplies can now be ferried in over the coming days.
Keep the logs and combine them in a book. Great writing, love it.
Thanks mate. It would require real writing skill to make it worth publishing. I am thinking of taking some writing courses, to improve as I really have fun unpacking what I see happening and sharing it.
