Historical background:

Key Aspects of the Campaign
  • Motivation: Following victory at Second Manassas, Lee moved north on September 4, 1862, hoping to win European recognition and persuade Maryland to join the Confederacy.
  • Key Commanders: Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee (Army of Northern Virginia) vs. Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan (Army of the Potomac).
  • The Lost Order: Union soldiers found a misplaced copy of Lee's operating plans (Special Order 191), which revealed he had divided his army, allowing McClellan to catch him, though the Union leader acted slowly.
  • Key Battles:
    • Battle of Harpers Ferry (Sept 12-15): Stonewall Jackson captured a massive Union garrison, bringing those forces back to the main Confederate army just in time.
    • Battle of South Mountain (Sept 14): A Union victory that delayed Lee and allowed them to concentrate behind Antietam Creek.
    • Battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg (Sept 17): A savage, tactical draw that resulted in over 23,000 casualties.
  • Outcome and Significance: Lee was forced to withdraw back across the Potomac, ending his invasion. This provided President Abraham Lincoln the political strength to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation
