Weapons Ammo and Targets : Heroes of the Gap

Here is a great post from Steve Pultorak over at BGG about weapons and Ammo and how they differ in LNL HotG versus other LNL Modules:

There has been some adjusting to the new (1985) weapons, ammo and targets so I thought some visuals might help.

Example #1 shows the BMP1 which has two weapons. Both weapons fire HEAT ammo.

Its gun can fire (OFT modifiers) at soft targets using the top two rows numbers above the split (range 6-9-15-to-hit 8-6-4) on counters back. If it “hits” its target proceed to to resolve using the HE Equivalent value of 3 (on front of counter) and a damage check (DFT)

It may also fire its ATGMs using the top two rows (the numbers below the split 10-20-50, *-6-9). If firing at soft targets, resolve as above but use the ATGM HE Equivalent of 4 (top right on back of counter). HEAT ammo has a modifier of -1 to HE the value if firing at infantry NOT in a building or bunker.

If firing at armored targets (with either weapon) you still need “to hit” your target (using OFT modifiers) but then would use the bottom row (penetration *-10-10) to resolve. Whenever ATGMs are fired you risk running out of ATGMs if the white die is < the boxed number on counters front (5). Here HEAT ammo has a -4 penetration value if firing at a target with red armor factors.

Note that I have removed the bottom left (below the split) penetration value of 10 and replaced it with an asterisk as the ATGM warhead actually doesn’t arm itself until after 10 hexes range. My counter images reflect this change on my Ordnance Chart in the files section of this game.

Example #2 is with the M163.

Its gun can fire (OFT modifiers) at soft targets with the top row (above the split) black numbers, 10-20-30 and second row black 9-7-5 to hit. Then use the HE value of 3, resolving with Damage checks on the DFT. This weapon can fire 3 times.

It can fire the same weapon once (3 times) at armored targets (using OFT modifiers) but after getting a hit, resolve penetration with the bottom row’s black 3-2-1 (above the split) against the targets armor thickness.

It also can fire at aircraft with its AA (blue) numbers on the counters back and resolving hits with the bottom row’s 3-2-1 penetration factors (below the split) against an aircraft’s armor protection.

Example #3 is the M901.
It fires ATGMs with HEAT ammo.

If firing at a soft target, use the top and second rows for range 3-6-70 and “to-hit” *-8-11 (OFT modifiers) with an HE Equivalent of 5 on front of counter (and repeated on back as well) resolving on the DFT Damage checks

If firing at armored targets you still use the top two rows to hit, followed by the bottom row *-18-18 penetration value against the targets armor value. Remember HEAT’s penetration is reduced -4 against red armor factors.

Whenever this unit fires, it runs out of ATGMs if less than 2 is rolled on the white die when rolling “to hit”

Again note I have removed an 18 from counters-back bottom left box under the 3 range as the ATGM arms itself only after the 3rd hex.

Lastly is the M1.

One gun firing traditional AP rounds against armor and HE against infantry.

The top two rows on back are used for range to hit; using OFT modifiers. If a hit is achieved against soft targets use the front’s HE equivalent of 5. If a hit is achieved against an armored target use the bottom row of penetration factors against the target’s armor.
