Assault Turn 8

An image from NATO fire phase in Turn 8. In terms of the scenario, the Soviets appear to be taking a pause to (probably) bring in artillery and air support after initial efforts to break through the German line were unsuccessful.

David (Soviets) has pushed his 3rd T-80 battalion into the center of the German line, where he is able to get them into a position to volley fire the entire battalion at dug-in German infantry, scoring a hit and suppressing the remaining step.

Down on the southern corridor, another key feature of engineering work is shown: it makes units actually stop. As a result, you can really concentrate artillery and other fires. In this case I max ROF a German mortar platoon for 144 HE points, which eliminates a platoon of Soviet engineers and a platoon of infantry.

The image also shows some of the neat features in the assault module. Note the double-density minefield that is visible to the NATO player but still hidden to the Soviet player. Also note the nice target/shooter markers to clarify fire phase actions. There’s also a “pop up” marker for the helos.
